Simple Washer Maintenance Tips to Avoid Costly Repairs

A washing machine is one of the hardest-working appliances in the house. With regular use, it’s easy for small issues to turn into expensive repairs. At Jeffrey’s Appliance Service, we see many washer problems that could have been prevented with a few simple maintenance habits.

Monthly Maintenance Habits

Clean the lint filter and drain pump filter.
Many washers have a small filter near the bottom front that traps coins, lint, and debris. Check and clean it once a month. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of drainage problems and error codes.

Run a cleaning cycle.
Once a month, run an empty hot-water cycle with a washer cleaner tablet or a cup of white vinegar. This helps remove detergent residue, mold, and odors—especially important for front-load washers.

Leave the door open after use.
After every load, wipe the rubber door gasket and leave the door slightly ajar. This prevents mold and mildew from growing in the moisture that gets trapped inside.

Check the hoses.
Inspect the fill hoses behind the washer a couple of times a year. Look for cracks, bulges, or leaks. Replacing old rubber hoses with braided stainless-steel ones can help prevent major water damage.

What to Avoid

  • Don’t overload the machine. Overloading strains the motor, suspension, and bearings.

  • Use the right amount of high-efficiency (HE) detergent. Too much detergent creates excess suds and residue.

  • Avoid washing heavy items like rugs or multiple heavy blankets at once unless your machine is specifically rated for them.

When to Call for Service

If you notice unusual noises, the washer won’t drain, clothes come out still soaking wet, or you see error codes you can’t clear, it’s time to call a technician. Catching problems early is usually much less expensive than waiting until the machine stops working completely.
