Your refrigerator works around the clock, so small maintenance habits can make a big difference in performance, energy use, and lifespan. At Jeffrey’s Appliance Service, we regularly see refrigerator problems that are easy to prevent with a little attention.
Easy Monthly and Seasonal Habits
Clean the condenser coils.
Dust and pet hair build up on the coils (usually behind or underneath the fridge). Dirty coils force the compressor to work harder, which can lead to cooling problems and higher energy bills. Vacuum or brush them every 6–12 months.
Check and replace the door seals.
Run your hand around the door gasket. If you feel cold air escaping or the seal looks cracked or loose, it needs attention. A poor seal makes the refrigerator run longer and can cause temperature issues or frost buildup.
Keep the interior clean and organized.
Wipe up spills promptly and avoid overcrowding. Good airflow helps the fridge maintain even temperatures. Don’t block the vents inside the unit.
Set the right temperature.
The ideal refrigerator temperature is 37°F (3°C) and the freezer should be 0°F (−18°C). Use a thermometer to verify, since the built-in dial isn’t always accurate.
Change the water filter on schedule.
If your fridge has a water and ice dispenser, replace the filter every 6 months (or as recommended). Old filters can reduce water flow and affect ice quality.
Common Warning Signs
Call for service if you notice:
Food spoiling faster than usual
The refrigerator running constantly
Unusual noises (clicking, buzzing, or grinding)
Water leaking inside or underneath
Ice maker not producing ice
Catching cooling or defrost issues early usually means a simpler, less expensive repair.
