A dishwasher that leaves dishes dirty or develops odors is usually a maintenance issue, not a failing machine. At Jeffrey’s Appliance Service, we see many dishwasher problems that are easy to avoid with a few regular habits.
Simple Maintenance Steps
Clean the filter regularly.
Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom of the tub. Food particles and grease collect here and can cause poor cleaning, bad smells, or drainage problems. Remove and rinse the filter under warm water every 1–2 weeks (or more often if you run the dishwasher frequently).
Check and clear the spray arms.
The spray arms can get clogged with mineral deposits or food debris. Remove them periodically and rinse out the holes with water. A toothpick or small brush works well for stubborn blockages.
Run a cleaning cycle.
Once a month, run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or a cup of white vinegar placed in a bowl on the top rack. This helps break down grease and mineral buildup inside the machine.
Scrape plates, don’t pre-rinse heavily.
Modern dishwashers and detergents are designed to handle some food residue. Over-rinsing can actually reduce cleaning performance because sensors may think the load is already clean. Just scrape large pieces into the trash.
Inspect the door gasket.
Wipe the rubber seal around the door regularly to remove food particles and prevent mold. A dirty or damaged gasket can also cause leaks.
Common Problems to Watch For
Call for service if you notice:
Dishes coming out dirty or spotted
Water left in the bottom of the tub
Unusual noises during the cycle
The dishwasher not draining
Leaks around the door
These issues are often caused by a clogged filter, spray arm problem, or drain issue and are usually straightforward to repair when caught early.
