Dryers are one of the leading causes of home fires when lint builds up, but regular maintenance can keep yours running safely and efficiently. At Jeffrey’s Appliance Service, we see many dryer issues that are simple to prevent.
Essential Maintenance Habits
Clean the lint filter after every load.
This is the single most important step. A clogged lint filter reduces airflow, makes the dryer work harder, increases drying time, and raises the risk of overheating or fire.
Clean the dryer vent and ductwork.
Lint can accumulate in the vent hose and exterior vent even if you clean the filter. Have the vent system cleaned at least once a year (more often if you do a lot of laundry). Restricted airflow is a common cause of long dry times and overheating.
Check the exterior vent flap.
Make sure the outside vent cover opens freely when the dryer is running and closes when it’s off. A stuck flap traps heat and moisture.
Inspect the drum and seals.
Occasionally look inside the drum for worn spots or objects that may have fallen behind it. Also check the door seal for tears that can let heat escape or allow lint to escape into the cabinet.
Don’t overload the dryer.
Overloading strains the motor, belt, and rollers and prevents clothes from drying evenly. Leave enough room for clothes to tumble freely.
Warning Signs to Watch For
Call for service if you notice:
Clothes taking much longer to dry
The dryer running very hot
Burning smells
Unusual noises (squealing, thumping, or grinding)
The dryer not heating at all
These symptoms often point to a clogged vent, failing heating element, worn belt, or bad rollers — issues that are usually repairable when caught early.
