Undercounter Ice Machine Maintenance Tips

Undercounter ice machines are convenient, but they need regular care to keep producing clean ice and avoid costly breakdowns. At Jeffrey’s Appliance Service, we repair many undercounter ice makers, and most problems come from skipped maintenance.

Essential Maintenance Steps

Clean the ice machine regularly.
Mineral scale and bacteria can build up inside the unit. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions (usually every 3–6 months). Use a nickel-safe ice machine cleaner or the cleaner recommended for your brand. Run the clean cycle and thoroughly rinse the system so no cleaner residue remains.

Change or clean the water filter.
If your ice machine has a water filter, replace it on schedule (typically every 6 months). A clogged filter reduces water flow, slows ice production, and can affect ice quality.

Keep the condenser coils clean.
Dust and lint on the condenser coils force the machine to work harder and can lead to poor ice production or overheating. Vacuum or brush the coils every few months (location varies by model—check your manual).

Check the drain and water supply.
Make sure the drain line isn’t kinked or clogged and that the water supply valve is fully open. Poor drainage or low water pressure are common causes of incomplete cycles or no ice.

Leave space for airflow.
Undercounter units need proper ventilation. Don’t block the vents or pack items tightly around the machine. Restricted airflow reduces efficiency and can cause the unit to shut down.

Common Warning Signs

Call for service if you notice:

  • Ice production has slowed significantly or stopped

  • Ice tastes or smells bad

  • The machine is making unusual noises

  • Water is leaking

  • The unit runs constantly but makes little or no ice

These issues are often related to scale buildup, a failing water inlet valve, dirty condenser, or a problem with the harvest system—and they’re usually repairable when caught early.
