KitchenAid Mixer Tips to Keep Yours Running Smoothly

A KitchenAid stand mixer is a workhorse in many kitchens, but like any appliance, it performs best with a little care. At Jeffrey’s Appliance Service, we repair KitchenAid mixers in our shop, and most issues we see are preventable with simple habits.

Everyday Tips for Better Performance and Longer Life

Don’t overload the mixer.
KitchenAid mixers are powerful, but thick doughs (especially bread dough) can strain the motor if the batch is too large. Follow the capacity guidelines in your manual for the type of dough you’re making. Overloading is one of the most common causes of motor or gear problems.

Use the right speed.
Start on low when adding dry ingredients to avoid a flour cloud, then increase speed as needed. Avoid running the mixer on high for long periods with heavy mixtures.

Clean it properly.
Wipe the mixer body with a damp cloth — never submerge the base in water. The bowl, flat beater, wire whip, and dough hook are usually dishwasher-safe, but check your model. Dry everything thoroughly before storing.

Check and tighten the band or screw.
On tilt-head models, make sure the head locks securely. On bowl-lift models, ensure the bowl is properly seated. A loose fit can cause the beater to hit the bowl or reduce mixing efficiency.

Listen for unusual noises.
Grinding, knocking, or a burning smell can indicate worn gears, a failing motor, or something caught in the planetary. Stop using the mixer and have it checked if you hear new or loud noises.

Simple Maintenance

  • Occasionally wipe under the trim band (tilt-head models) where flour and debris can collect.

  • Store the mixer with the head down or covered to keep dust out of the gears.

  • If the mixer has been sitting unused for a long time, run it briefly on low before heavy use.

When to Bring It In for Repair

KitchenAid mixers are generally very repairable. Common fixes include replacing the worm gear, motor, or speed control board.

Important: We do not service KitchenAid mixers in the field. These units need to be brought into our shop for diagnosis and repair. In-shop service is typically faster and more affordable for smaller appliances like mixers.
